Just about every home has a junk drawer, closet, or even room where miscellaneous odds and ends get thrown, stored, and forgotten about. If you run a commercial storeroom, you may be treating it in the same way. Unfortunately, when it comes to your business, having a catch-all area isn’t helping your productivity. Here’s how to clean up the clutter and start running your storeroom like a pro.
1. Start off each year with a clean slate. Go through your storeroom and do some heavy spring cleaning and organizing. You may need to do this more than once a year if you tend to get big shipments often.
2. Label everything. This way, anybody on your staff can head back to the storeroom and search for what they need even if they’ve never seen it before. Try to label everything with a SKY number, product name, and description.
3. Use an inventory tracker to keep tabs on everything you have and how often you use certain items. Then, move the supplies and parts that you use all the time to the front of the storeroom for easy access.
4. Group similar items together. If you need to grab multiple products for the same order, they’ll be close to each other.
Once you’re finished organizing, you’ll have plenty of space ready for when your next order comes in. If you’ve realized that you’re short on some supplies, you can contact us to order a new shipment.
